World Wakeboarding Championship – Nathan Vagg
After a successful summer of riding in 2012/2013, I competed in the Australian National Titles for Tasmania and scored 2nd place in my division.
Following this I was selected to represent the Australian Team at the World Wakeboarding Championship held in Korea in late August. This is the first time I have been asked to compete at this level and it was always a dream to one day be able to compete in the World Championships. This meant that all my free time was dedicated to training and riding in the very cold water during winter.
I travelled to Busan, Korea in late August and on the first day of riding I received the highest score in my qualifying heat to secure a place straight through the semifinal. Each run takes around 5mins, one run up and the boat turns and another run back, where 3 judges score each run based on the intensity and technical ability of each trick.
The semifinal was a tight run with bad water but I stuck to my run and made it straight through to the finals. I finished in 6th place at the World Championships and while it was not the result I had hoped for it has made me more determined to ride hard and learn more and who knows where to next. Australia finished 1st overall so each person in the team walked away with a gold medal and the presentation is one I will not forget. It was an amazing experience at this level . My next focus is on our upcoming State Competitions where I will compete and then take on the Nationals.
I am so proud to be part of a supportive and progressive club like Meadowbank. I have been a club member for most of my life and without the club facilities and the sponsorship of our club it wouldn’t be possible for me and many others to take part in competitive riding.
